The 7 Easy Steps towards Hosting a Website Online

Hosting a website is a like taking a leak out at the back of your house: you can do it without the help of others, it doesn’t take long to do, and you start feeling great as you draw closer to the finish. Finding a webhost is one of the easiest phases in launching a website or blog. It’s practically a no-brainer, so following the steps below shouldn’t be a headache at all.

7 Steps for Hosting a Website:

Do a quick search in Google for a list of the top webhosts. You’ll see a lot of the best ones ranking on the first pages of the SERPs. These hosts will most likely be included in “Top bla bla bla” lists. When choosing one, make sure the company is legit, reputable, and has been around for quite a while.

Sign up with the best possible company (in accordance to your needs). Here, all you have to do now is signup with the one that offers the decent rates plus services. Next, state the number of years you want to have your site hosted prior to renewal, and pay them with your selected mode of payment. After doing so, you’ll immediately be given access to your host’s user control panel.

Configure your FTP (File Transfer Protocol) settings with your account. This’ll require you to create a master FTP account with your selected webhost. Remember the login details, or jot it down in a text file, and save it on your computer’s desktop.

Download a FTP program. An FTP program is a special software which allows you to upload all the pages of your site going to your webhost. Personally, I use FileZilla, because it’s free, and I have a crap waffle budget allotted for running this website! Make no mistake though: this program still gets the job done, and I have no problems with using it whatsoever.

Upload your site using the FTP program. Here, simply fill in the login details for the program (which is the same as the info utilized when configuring your FTP account with your host), and upload your site to your host’s document root, which is usually the “public_html” or the “www” folder.

Revel in your website’s glory! Spend five minutes staring at your website’s homepage, and the another five scouring through its pages. This step is unnecessary, but it sure does feel good!

The Slackers’ Webhost:

This website is signed up with the iPage webhost. It’s not just because of all the good reviews we’ve read about these guys, but because of the extraordinary experience we’ve had with them so far. Aside from boasting excellent core services — or the fact that they’ve been in the business since 1998 (other webhosts tend to set up shop and crash just as quickly – they also feature a very intuitive user control panel with a lot of neat tools that webmaster noobs could find in handy for creating their first site.

Regardless of what we choose to host this site, the decision ultimately boils down to your personal preference, which I certainly hope is based on research!
